Frustrates me too sometimes... Im not sure that ssliding even helps except the fact that sliding makes them harder to target. I have defeated a bunch of sliders just by sidestepping or moving (steals their auto attack) and using the number keys to target them. Since sliding is considered a tactic of pvp just like mages go in rooms launch spells then run out of the room. Its irritating I know... Tell your other teammates to target sliders!
